In the workplace, we use words and not fists. So you might be wondering why we’re talking about corporate boxing programs—and why our co-director Ben is a certified Thump boxing trainer, a qualification he puts to use by providing classes to the community and our clients.

Boxing as a form of exercise is not about aggression. It is a fantastic fitness regime, working not only your body but also your brain as you learn and execute moves. It’s a great way to physically work through stress or frustration, and can also boost your team culture and connections.

We think that boxing training, along with other forms of group exercise, is a fantastic resource for a company to offer their staff. Here’s a closer look at the benefits of boxing as part of your corporate wellness program, straight from the brain of our ex-competitive boxer Ben.

Boxing keeps you strong and fit

You’ve all seen pro boxers with their shirts off. It’s no secret that boxing is a strenuous workout, both cardio-wise and for your muscles. As an exercise form, boxing can:

  • Target the entire body for a holistic workout.
  • Boost those feel-good endorphins.
  • Improve balance.
  • Lower blood pressure.

As workouts go, boxing is near the top of the list for an effective whole-body burn. It’s also great for core stability, an aspect of strength that will carry benefits through to other areas of life. A good punch comes from a strong and stable core!

Boxing is good for your brain and mental state

In addition to working out your whole body, boxing has benefits for your brain function. The footwork and punches required get your grey matter working. In fact, several studies (like this one) have shown some correlation between boxing training and improvements in the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Training involves recall of instructions, co-ordinated footwork, and other activities to stimulate the brain.

Boxing can help you to hone your problem-solving skills and boost creativity by getting your blood properly pumping. It’s great for hand-eye coordination, too—so players of ball sports should definitely incorporate some boxing into their lives.

We’ve already talked at length about how exercise is good for your mental wellbeing—boxing is no exception. Take a look at our previous blog for more.

It’s team building and motivational

Individual health benefits aside, boxing as part of a corporate wellness program has benefits for your teams. It can be used as a fun bonding activity and one that is a great stress-reliever. Putting on some mitts and hitting a punching bag or pads can release tension like nothing else.

Seeing progress in their boxing practice can also provide your people with improved confidence, self-esteem, and motivation—all of which will only be a benefit in all aspects of their life, including work. Healthier, happier, physically and mentally stronger employees? Good news for any business!
